(Very happy that WordPress knows I’m an idiot and auto-saved this post from yesterday!)
Sunny, humid, 69 degrees. 5.04 miles
Dog felt good this morning. He kept up for the most part. I stopped at one of the streams and let him soak a bit. He likes that on hotter days.
I felt good too. Woke up at 4:50. Shut off the alarm. Dog was up shortly after that, yipping to go out. Once you’re up, it seems to set in motion an irreversible sequence of events that you can’t get away from. Once you’re up, you’re up.
I would like to capture that first few minutes of purity in the waking morning. I would like to stop the world and live my life there. Unburdened by the stress of existence. The fresh sunlight shining in the windows through the trees. The birds talking to each other, no doubt about the immediacy of life. The freshets of cool morning air sweetly drifting across our repose.
Early morning is a time unencumbered by the sins of the past and the guilt of the undone.
Ran out into the field but did it as an out and back to keep it to 5 miles.
Trails are drying nicely. On the way back where I have a sharp downhill on the road crossing I was passed by a peloton of roadies going quite fast in formation. Their leader shouting terse commands. A wave of testosterone crested in front of them.
I passed a woman running with her dog in my trails. She seemed like a pretty solid runner. I wonder who she is. She smiled. I’m going to have to start wearing nicer cloths when I go running in the woods now!
The forest is full-on greening up now. We’ve had such a wet spring everything is growing. The plants are growing, which leads to the rabbits and mice populations exploding, which leads to more predators and more parasites. Ad infinity.
It’s a good year for the cycle of life. Bad year if you don’t like bugs. Lots of ticks and mosquitoes. The deer flies aren’t out yet but I assume they will be harassing us soon.
You get a decade of wet weather like this and we northern hemisphere people rise up to invade the lowlands. We Huns, we Mongols, we Vikingers.
Cheers,
Chris,
