Kale Wad

Squeegan Kale Wads

The next big thing…

This is a discovery from experimenting with the food processor.

First I combined dried apricots, prunes, raw almonds and pepitas (pumpkin seed kernels) and ground them up.  The mixture was a little dry so I added some honey.  (Honey is permissible on the Sqeegan diet).  This produced a nice sticky mixture that I was able to break up into several plastic baggies to take with me in my laptop bag.

It was a bit of a gooey nut and prune log.  Something strangely sweet and satisfying.

Then I had one of those mad scientist epiphanies.  I had a few kale stock left over from the weekend farm stand visit.  The really nice purple stuff.  I was heading out on a trip and didn’t want them to go to waste.

I ripped them up, stems and all and tossed them into the food processor.  The food processor was struggling with the kale so I threw in some almonds, pepitas, apricots and prunes.  What emerged was a beautiful dark wad of substance.

It tastes good, well reasonably good and has those magical kale nutrients that Jake loves.  The consistency was perfect.  The fibrous nature of the kale creates a nice infrastructure for the other ingredients to cling to.

I rolled it up in some plastic baggies and I’ve been noshing on it all week.  You just break off a little chunk of kale wad and chow it down with some water.  It is very filling.  It must be good for me.

There you have it.  The invention of the kale wad.  The next big thing.

It travels well and most of the mechanical chewing has been removed from the process.
