Quick Note on Books I’ve Recently Read
That you may like.
These are some amazing books that I have listened to on audio during my runs in the past weeks.
- Bill Burnett and Dave Evans – Designing Your Life – https://designingyour.life/
I referenced this book in the last show. It’s a very useful toolbox from two professors from Stanford who use design theory to create ‘the instruction manual they wish they got when they were undergraduates’. Some useful tips and techniques.
- Martha Beck – Beyond Anxiety – https://marthabeck.com/beyond-anxiety
This is the first of two Martha Beck books I listened to over the last few weeks. Read by the author with a humility, vulnerability, warmth and sense of humor, this book deconstructs modern life, why it’s killing you and what you can do to save your sanity. Martha is a Harvard educated escapee from the Mormon church who has lived quite a life. She brings us on a journey through how creativity can be used to unwind the damage of modern culture.
I loved this book – it hit right when I needed it.
- Martha Beck – The Way of Integrity – https://marthabeck.com/the-way-of-integrity/
After listening to ‘Beyond Anxiety’ I went looking for more of Martha’s work and found the way of integrity. In a brilliant, warm and funny way she blows up the myths of hustle culture and explains why the reason you are so miserable is that you are out of alignment with your integrity. Brilliant and thoughtful. Did I say brilliant again? Brilliant.
- Hal Elrod – The Miracle Morning After 50 – https://www.miraclemorningafter50.com/
I’ve known Hal and followed his work for the past couple decades, so when he asked for people to help him launch his new book ‘The Miracle Morning After 50’ I jumped in. I have used the miracle morning methodology sporadically since learning about it and it has truly helped weather some rough times. If you can get your mindset right first thing in the morning, everything else flows. This version of the book for people over 50, again, found me when I needed it. It has a lot of overlap but there are some extras that are helpful too.
- 40Fied – http://www.40fiedmenshealth.com.au/
This of course is the topic of my conversation with Tamas today. Great nuggets. Universal lessons.
- Noah Davis – The Last Beast we Revel in – https://cavankerrypress.org/products/the-last-beast-we-revel-in
Fun story. I met Noah at a local author fair at the public library in Groton. He’s a big guy, looks and dresses like a lumberjack. You can imagine my surprise when I found out he and his wife are in my running club, yes, but he is also a full-on MFA and published poet. I read this collection of poems about the people and nature of Appalachia as part of my morning routine. Uplifting and beautiful. Really made my week!
