Totally biased food report.
I spoke with Ken Weary about his new website www.fitnosh.com and he sent me a care package with some goodies to try. Here are some that I tried and my reaction…
One thing I really liked was the Cave Man Bar. It is coconut, almonds and honey. It was yummy and substantial and filling. It gave me energy and I felt like I was eating real food.
The second thing was my old favorite Chocolate#9 energy gels. They are a agave based energy gel that are chocolate. Love them. Love the taste and they give me the same energy boost as any other standard gel from the mass-producers.
There were some other energy bars and nuts that were quite yummy too.
The one thing that I thought I should like was the chia seed drink mixes. Chia seeds have been attributed god-like powers from several pundits, especially the vegan community. I was very excited to try them.
You mix them into your water bottle, but they don’t really dissolve like a regular energy drink. They float around in a bit of a slurry. I took these with me on two long rides. I can digest almost anything while riding a bike because my heart rate is pretty low and I’m used to multi-hour endurance events.
I had trouble with this stuff. It didn’t make me sick but it gave me a slightly queasy stomach. I think they must expand in your gut. I felt ‘full’ – which was bad because I needed to get more fluid in me on these rides and had to force water down on top of the chia-slurry.
Maybe I’m not doing it right, and I’m will ing to admit I don’t know anything at all about chia seeds but I wouldn’t rush out and get it for my next race. At least not until I figured out its role. Is it a drink or a food? Is it supposed to hydrate me or give me energy? I just don’t know.
Go ahead and look at Ken’s site www.fitnosh.com and get your own care package to experiement with some fun new healthy training food.
