Episode 5-497 – Podiatrist Dr. Savannah Santiago and surges
Hello my running friends. Welcome to episode 5-496 of the RunRunLive podcast.
Once more we find ourselves together my friends. How are you navigating the weirdness of these days?
For today’s interview we talk with Dr. Savannah Santiago who is a podiatrist and runner from San Diego doing her residency in Indianna.
First, let me say that this is the most fun I’ve had talking to someone in a long time. She was so positive and engaged – just glowing with positive karma. And it just makes me happy to know that souls like her exist in the world.
I’ve started, or reverted to, using Zoom to record these interviews. That means we are usually both on camera during the chat – so I get to see the body language of who I’m talking to. I almost want to start posting the video versions of this because I think it would be fun for you to put a face with a voice.
In section one I’m going to get all geeky runner guy and do a deep dive into tempo training in general and surge runs in particular – which my running buddies mocked me by calling them ‘Serge’ runs.
In section two I’ll ramble about getting old.
It’s my birthday next week. And I think I’ve been having the same conversation every birthday since I turned 30!
I used to tell stories on this show, right? Stories about my adventures?
Well, let’s do that.
I was out running with Ollie on the leash on the rail trail a couple weeks ago. Just an easy out and back. I was still nursing the shoulder. On my way out I came to the first road crossing and there was a local police car parked there with the young officer standing outside nad looking down the trail.
Since I had time I was over on the Nashoba rail trail running from the Ayer end into Groton. Groton is where I grew up. This was a Groton cop. Groton is not what you would call a high crime area. It’s a suburban bedroom community that has become increasingly affluent over the years.
I had that momentary fear that somehow I was breaking some law that I didn’t know about because the cop wanted to talk to me. He asked me if I had seen two kids on mountain bikes, potentially carrying something that might look like spray paint cans.
I replied honestly that I really don’t pay attention when I’m running but nobody like that had passed me so far. We had a nice chat. Apparently some kids were trying to tag one of the bridges along the trail. We had a friendly chat and Ollie and I kept going.
A mile or so later Ollie and I go under another road and the same cop is standing in the trail. He asks me about the same caper and I reveal all my intel, which isn’t much, that I still haven’t seen two kids on mountain bikes with spray paint cans, but there were a couple mountain bikes beside the trail by the pond that I passed.
And we keep going.
On my way back now – and there’s a police car driving down the rail trail towards me. This time it’s a different cop and he’s a bit surly when I suggest that don’t they have anything better to do than to chase kids around all day? Seriously, we’re not talking about a dirty bomb here. Kids will be kids.
And I remember growing up in Groton. In different times. That night my buddy and I were racing our motorcycles through the center of town at 80+ miles per hour and got pulled over by the Sherrif. He made us dump out our beer and told us to go home.
Just a story. Because I was told people like stories.
Let’s get at it!
On with the show.

Outro
Apologies Listeners, my outro was eaten by a ill-timed Microsoft update. I’m pretty sure no one reads this stuff anyhow – so listen to the end of the show and you will have it there.
Cheers.
And I’ll see you out there.
