Hello my running friends.
This week I’m continuing my streak of double dipping on the interviews from my other podcast and presenting you with George Allen Miller. He’s an author and we have a nice, tight chat about the creative process and some aspects of publishing and our favorite Sci-Fi.
So – if you are one of those double dippers who already listened to my After the Apocalypse podcast you can fast forward through the interview section, but I will also have some unique content of you as well
In section one I’ll continue my Runner FAQ conversation. In section two I’ll do an old-man nutrition rant.
Here we are – the ides of August, 2024. Rolling into that busy time of year, with back to school and all those activities associated with the fall.
When I say “Ides of August” I am being ironic because August is, of course, named after Augustus, better known as Octavian who was an adopted heir of Julius Caesar, (who BTW gives us the month July). Octavian came out on top of the civil war that broke out after Brutus and crew stabbed Caesar to death on the Ides of March.
After he came out on top, Octavian started calling himself Augustus, which basically means “Really Cool.” And about this time they inserted a couple new months into the calendar, July and August to keep festivals from moving around so much.
Which made the names of the other months, September, October, November, December – literally 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th month, make no sense at all.
But we still use them.
And if that bothers you, don’t even worry about the fact that our days of the week are named after pagan, Viking gods.
Anyhow – we have a good, short interview with George. I enjoyed it.
I’m doing well, working hard. Ollie and I are getting our runs in. We’re looking forward to the cooler weather.
So, remember, you will be shoveling snow in 12 weeks.
On with the show.

Outro
That’s it my friend you have world built through to the end of yet another RunRunLive – episode 5-492.
How am I doing against my summer goals?
Number one; training for a 100K on my birthday in November. It’s going well. The old body is hanging in there and I’m starting to load some distance and intensity. Right on track.
Number two; lose weight. Well I hired Rachel again for the time leading up to the race because I had plateaued in the low 180’s. I’m back on track and at my lowest weight since 2018. It’s hard. But I’m getting there.
Number three; to get the first manuscript of my 5-season Apocalypse series published. That is moving forward as well. I was stuck, but I have been able to come at it from a couple different directions and I’m back on track.
I’ve also started, with my esteemed editing team, writing and producing season 5 of After the Apocalypse. It’s crazy, but I almost feel like a responsible adult when I realize I was able to execute a 5-year plan successfully. I mean some people can’t even stay on track for a 3-hour tour. (That was a joke for Baby boomers)
I have been harvesting tons of giant heirloom tomatoes out of my garden. I’m fighting some critter who also likes them, but they have been leaving me enough. Had a good run of cucumbers and squash too.
So I’m going to leave you with a couple simple, healthy recipes to use up all those tomatoes and cucumbers and squash.
First is Tomato cucumber salad.
Know what the ingredients are? Tomatoes and cucumbers.
Right. Get a big bowl. Cut your tomatoes and cucumbers up into cubes. Put them in the big bowl. Add a few tablespoons of lime juice, a dash of olive oil, and salt to taste. That’s the base recipe. If you can squeeze the juice out of an actual lime you get extra credit.
Into this base you can fold some tasty, chopped onions if you are so disposed, or chives or basil. If you have a hankering for protein you can mix in some beans, lentils or bean sprouts.
Stir this up and let the lime juice get all cuddly with the ingredients. Put leftovers in containers in the fridge it will last for a few days.
Got it?
What about those squash?
Tomato squash soup. Works best with zucchini but will work with other squash.
Sautee some garlic and an onion until they are browning.
While that’s cooking, cube up your tomatoes and squash in a bowl. Add oregano, sage, whatever else you like for spices. A little salt and pepper.
That is your base.
Chuck all that in the slow cooker, add water until it’s covered, stir it up and let it cook for a few hours. It’s really good and hearty and filling.
I also use a hot pepper or two from the garden. I sauté half the pepper with the onions nad garlic and put the rest into the tomatoes and squash.
If you’re not cholesterol challenged feel free to add meat to this it goes great with sausage. If you want a vegan option you can add beans, or rice, or barley to the mix.
Again, you can store the leftovers in the fridge for a few days.
If you ever told me, when I was a kid, that I would be handing out cooking recommendations I would have said you were high.
But, we all find our way. We all learn.
We have free will.
So hitch up your short shorts and face the fear of freedom
And I’ll see you out there.
