5.3 miles, 69 Degrees, overcast and muggy.
I’ve heard that the Romans didn’t have a concept of hours and minutes like we do. They had ‘morning’ and ‘midday’ and ‘afternoon’, but not 9:00AM or 2:23PM. This meant that their days naturally flexed with the solstices and the natural rhythm of the planet. You didn’t show up at the senate for a 8:00 AM session, you showed up for a ‘morning’ session.
After this weeks solstice musings I think my mind was curious about when the sun actually begins to glow in the morning. I woke up at 3:30 AM to bird song and sunglow. This time of year the sun doesn’t so much rise and set. It rather describes a lazy S-curve about the horizon.
One of the outcomes or influences of this 5 at 5 project is that I’ve become quite attuned to the environmental nature of the mornings. You can see the early posts are about me, and how I feel – inwardly focused. The last week or so have grown more environmentally tuned.
Perhaps the green light of the forest is seeping into my soul. Humans see the most detail in the green spectrum. It is the center of our range. Green is our home setting. I think exposing yourself to it each morning has some sort of restorative or at least tempering effect.
The bugs are out. I was harried by voracious mosquitoes as I sat to put my shoes on sitting on my front steps. The deer flies found me as I passed through the deep muddy cleft on the back side of the meadow before the ridge. They bothered the back of my head the rest of the run. I picked up the pace to get ahead of them. Tomorrow I’ll have to break out the deer fly hat.
Buddy did ok this morning. Still slow and lagging behind, but not unhappy. I’m going to work from home today so I can catch up on chores between calls and creative work.
Enjoy your weekend,
Chris,
