Episode 5-512 – Michael Ceely the Discipline of Athletes Over Hate

Episode 5-512 – Michael Ceely the Discipline of Athletes Over Hate

Hello my running friends.

Today is the last of our four episodes focusing on the culture hate.  We have a conversation with Michael and talk bout it from an athlete’s point of view.

In section one I have a delightful story for you about industrial poultry products and in section two is a summary of what I think we have learned from this fou-episode arc.

Don’t worry, next episode we will be back in the running sphere of things.

I do appreciate you humoring my little road trip around the hate and polarization topic.  And one of the learnings for me from todays chat with Michael is that managing this polarized culture requires the same discipline that we use every day to get in shape and train for events.

We have the toolset already.  We can approach it as another self-improvement campaign, like a marathon training cycle.

So, do the work people!  Society needs us.  This is our moment.

This is my favorite time of year in New England.  The weather is warm but not too warm.  The plants and flowers are exploding out of the ground.  The days are long, long, long and full of light.

Honestly it feels special and I’m working really hard to appreciate it.  Because it isn’t really a season, it’s more like a few days, or at most a couple of weeks and then it will be all heat and humidity and biting insects.

But…

The power of the pause.  It’s beautiful now.  Stop and breathe it in.  Let the universe show its beauty to you and don’t shade your eyes and look down the road into the future.

I couple editorial comments on today’s interview.  At one point I say the Mongols killed off 20% of the Chinese population.  In fact historians argue over the exact numbers because no one knows.  They agree it was significant.  And they attribute 40-60 million deaths the Mongols overall.

I also talk about a tribe being murdered ‘a million years ago’.  This is not true, it is hyperbole on my part.  The actual event I’m referencing is a discovery from around 10,000 years ago in Nataruk, Kenya that is interpreted in different ways, but one of the interpretations is a violent attack.   I’ll leave the Wikipedia link here and you can go argue among yourselves, but my point is that violent human behavior isn’t new.

With that, I will come back at the end to update you on my training.  It’s a beautiful time of year.  I hope everyone is doing well.  If there is ever anything I can do for you, feel free to reach out and start a conversation.

I’m still thinking about my summer goals but I’m aiming for a qualification attempt in September and have started those wheels turning.

On with the show!

Outro

Ok my friends, you looked down from 30,000 feet to the end of another RunRunLive Podcast, Episode 5-512, end of the journey, on to happier things I can control.

So the race I’m training for is the Beantown Marathon at 7:00 AM on September 7th in Cove Park Hingham, Ma.  This gives me a solid 14 weeks for a training cycle to try for a BQ.

I have actually run this race before.  It is a flat, 6-loop race in a park.  Designed for qualifying attempts.  Last time I did not have the fitness and couldn’t hold the pace.

I’m frankly terrified to be trying to qualify again.  The way it looks I may need a 10-minute buffer, even if I qualify, to get into the race.

But, as always, don’t focus on the event, focus on the process and the event will either take care of itself or not.

Been playing with my paces and efforts to see what my baseline is and it’s encouraging.  But it’s still right on the edge of my ability.  I’ll need to get a good day and execute well.

Oh, and survive the training cycle while getting enough volume and intensity in my structured training.  A journey of discovery!

It’s good to have this early in September, because I have a lot of personal stuff lining up for the fall that I’ll need to be available for – non-running, family stuff.

Ollie is doing great.  And, of course, when we ran down by the Scout bridge yesterday he made sure to check that there were no turkey burgers to be had.  Believe it or not, Ollie is 6 years old.  This week I his birthday.  He’s still crazy, but he’s my brother and my spirit guide and I’m glad we decided on another dog when Buddy passed.

Keep fighting the good fight my friends.

And I’ll see you out there.
