Saturday – 5.2 Miles – 85 and super-muggy
Sunday – 8.2 Miles with the club – dry and sunny low 80’s
I slept in Saturday. Did my chores in the morning. Got out around lunchtime. It was soooooo humid. I was sweating like crazy. Gave Buddy the day off. This weather would end him. The rain came through but not enough to break the humidity.
Since I left the dog at home I was able to do the old loop all the way across the Boy Scout Bridge down to the pond. It was nice to get over there. To see the old trails. The trails were mostly dry but the rocks were greasy from the humidity and I had to catch myself once and scratched my phone.
When I got out to the far side of the pond I emerged into a line of tents. The Boy Scouts were camping out. They had their canoes and tents. A couple of them were sitting around in lawn chairs so I stopped to chat with them.
I fashioned myself a fly hat with a bandanna. The deer flies are out at my house. Those bastards are fast enough to catch me and they bite! They don’t poke you like a mosquito. They rip a slash in your flesh and then lap up the blood like a dog. Hate ’em.
Sunday I got out with the club. It was a clear, dry and sunny day. I rode my motorcycle over to the run. My bike is running great and I’m getting the old confidence back. It’s a blast. I bought a new pair of bluetooth headphones so I can listen to tunes in my helmet without having the wires. I put the phone in my backpack.
We had a good turnout. Bob led us up to the castle on Gibbet Hill. The view was amazing. We could clearly see Wachussett, Watatic and Monadnock. Then we went over to to water tower hill behind Martin’s Pond and we could see Boston very clearly.
Tim, Mike and I broke off at Williams Barn and took the trails over to the rail trail on Sand Hill. Mike pushed the pace on the rail trail. I was struggling. I’m not used to any kind of speed. Looking at the splits we were doing 7:40’s for the last couple miles coming in. Mike had just left his wife and their new boy in the maternity ward at Emerson! Sometimes you have to get your run in.
Another 40 mile week and my legs are fine. I’m curious to see what happens when I start training again.
Cheers,
