Intro:

Hello and Welcome to the Hurricane podcast where we are blown hither and thither by gusty winds, storm surges and driving rain. Not to mention a veritable hurricane of political ads.  So let’s you and I hunker down amid the hue and cry of the tumult and curl up with a cuddly endurance sports athlete because this is Chris your host and this is the RunRunLive Podcast and this is episode 249 and we have a great show for you today.

We have a fun interview with Pam who talks about her books and life managing endurance sports and balancing family life.

This show is getting out late this week.  I’d like to say it’s because I don’t have time but really it’s because I’m uninspired.  Uninspired is a code word I use for lazy.

And not because of hurricane damage either, we got off lightly up here in Mass.  The storm took a left turn a couple hundred miles to our south and slammed into NJ.  We lost power for a couple hours and there are a few big trees down in the woods but all are safe and sound in my world.

I was going to skip this show because it felt like a chore for some reason.  As we have been pounding out a weekly show since 2008 – over 4 years – I feel a bit like the producers of Happy Days and eventually Fonzie is going to have to jump the shark.  Let’s not let it get that far.

It’s been a weird week.  I was in the car on my way to get the ESWT for my plantar fasciitis this morning when they called me to cancel the appointment.  Apparently the machine was trapped in NYC.  That’s a bit annoying.  I had gotten comfortable with the thought of being in a boot for a month and now we have to reschedule.

My foot actually feels great.  On a pain scale of 1 – 10 it’s probably a 2.  I’ve been running 10k in the woods with the dog 3 times a week at an easy pace and it is fabulous.  I’m quite sure if I tried to take the foot out on the road and put it under any intensity or volume it would flare right up – but at this level it is sustainable.

I’ve also been doing two easy spins either on the trail if it’s warm or on the trainer if the weather is bad and two core workouts.  And this morning I weighed in at 188.2 pounds down from 196 last week.  I feel pretty good, but then again I always feel pretty good.

I think last week I referred to the calorie counting program that I’m using as “myfitnessapp” whereas the actual app is called “myfitnesspal” I have no affiliation with them but that’s what I’ve been using and I’ll talk about it a little today.

As I was riding around with my wife this morning NOT going to my ESWT appointment I thought up a few points that might interest you – so I’m going to do multiple small topics today.

Where’s that shark?  On with the show!

It took me a few months…but I kept at it and now can present to you The Mid-Packer’s Lament Audio book.  This is ~50 running stories read into audio by the author (me) and ends up being 6-8 hours of audio.

The Mid-Packer’s Lament is a series of short stories on long distance running, racing and the human comedy inherent in all sports enthusiasts.  This is the perfect book for runners and wannabe runners.  There are stories about training, eating, special places and special races.  There are stories about the accidental athlete in all of us and the stupid things we do for even amateur endeavors.  Whether you are a weekend mid-pack runner or a competitive club runner, you’ll find something thought provoking and amusing that you can relate to in the Mid-Packer’s Lament.

Hope you enjoy consuming it as much as I enjoyed recording it!

Ciao, thanks, and I’ll see you out there.

Pamela Hutchins… http://pamelahutchins.com/about-2/

Bio

Pamela Fagan Hutchins writes award-winning fiction and nonfiction about “having it all” from the position of having a little too much of everything, and loving it: writer, mediocre endurance athlete (triathlon, marathons), wife, mom of an ADHD & Asperger’s son, five kids/step-kids, business owner, recovering employment attorney and human resources executive, investigator, consultant, and musician.

Pamela lives her Type-A, alphabet soup, Brady Bunch life her her husband Eric and two high school-aged kids, plus 200 pounds of pets in Houston. Their hearts are still in St. Croix, USVI, along with those of their three oldest offspring. She’s a true Texan, though, born February 8, 1967 in Austin and raised mostly in Amarillo with stops in Floresville and DeLeon along the way.

Keep up with Pamela on the Road to Joy Blog. Road to Joy (or it might be Rode to Joy, depends upon the mood each day) — is a song reference; Eric didn’t get it, possibly because as a rock bassist he doesn’t listen to enough classical music.  Her entire family lives in terror of earning a mention on these pages.

Outro

All right my friends you have dug in and braved the winds and wave pounding on the beach of yet another RunRunLive Podcast.  Episode 249 in the can.

I’ve torn into the walls and am currently ripping out the wores and plumbing of RunRunLive 2.0 to create a new format for RunRunLive 3.0.

There won’t be a show next week, I’m on vacation.  Then I’ll follow up with episode 250, the final episode of this format.  I’ll have a nice introspective conversation with my old running buddy Frank who was my interviewee for episode 1.

After 250 I’ll switch to the new format and it will be a monthly schedule.

If you were on my mailing list you got a couple surveys this week from me asking what you liked and didn’t like from the show and what projects I should take on next.  It was very helpful feedback, thank you!

If you want to be on the mailing list you can sign up on my website at RunRunLive.com.

I have in my hot little hands an invitational entry for the 2013 Boston Marathon.  This is not a charity entry per se.  The BAA gives a couple invitational entries to various groups involved with the race.  I got mine from one of the Organizing Committee members.

I don’t think I’m a hypocrite for taking an invitational entry. I’m a good ambassador for the sport and the race.

That being said I would love your help and support.  There’s a banner on RunRunLive.com where you can throw a couple bucks my way for my selected charity – the great folks over at Team Hoyt.  If you can spare 10 or 20 bucks that’s great, if you want to throw more that’s awesome too!

Thank you all for listening and being my running buddies over the years.  Buddy and I are richer for your presence.

Here’s bit of a business piece that I wrote to take you out on being a content aggregator.

http://www.runrunlive.com/on-being-a-content-aggregator-versus-a-content-creator

And as you are breaking free of the shackles of your skill set I’ll see you out there.

Music tonight is some surf music called psyche a go go psyche out by Satan’s pilgrims…admit it, you’ll miss this awful music.

Ciao,

Great news my running friends – my book of running stories “The Mid-Packer’s Lament” is now available in Kindle format at the Kindle store on Amazon.com!  Just search on “Mid-Pack”.  It’s a bargain at an easy $5 and all proceeds go towards supporting the underfunded pension plan of the retired cleaning staff at the RunRunLive world headquarters. I recently got a kindle myself and I love it.  It does reading very well.

Chris, glad you will be still “casting”, albeit less frequently. I still lots of old ones to go through yet anyway!
Have you ever thought to interview Scott Jurek? I also have a friend i think you should interview, but i will ask him first..

  2. Enjoyed this episode. Pam’s training is inspiring. Your thoughts at the end of the show about changing your behavior to give yourself a chance to develop new skills sets, I have to listen to again. There was some good truth in that. Put it in the show notes please. I love how you sneak something profound into the show. I listen to the show because its about training and I am running along and then I almost have to stop running because you have blown my mind with this bit. Thanks for all the shows. You have been a training partner for me.
