5 at 5 day 27

5.3 miles, 57 Degrees, sunny and dry.

Didn’t sleep deeply.  Woke with that groggy feeling when you were denied a deep draught of REM.  Wife got home with Teresa late.  They are paving the main road by our house and they do it at night to avoid the traffic jams.  She couldn’t get to our house coming home from the train last night!  Of course she had to wake me up to lecture me on the injustice of all this and her deep personal injury and inconvenience.

It was a dry, clear night and I could hear the paving crews.  It’s a bit of a journey sleeping this time of year.  On cooler days like this we don’t turn on the air conditioner.  We open the windows and switch on the ceiling fan.  This typically means my journey starts trying to fall asleep while it’s a bit too hot, then waking up at some point shivering as the temperature drops outside and the fan blows the dampness from my bones.

The dog was up at 4:00 AM.  He doesn’t come upstairs much anymore.  He doesn’t trust his back end enough to manage the stairs.   He sits at the door downstairs and emits this periodic high pitched yelp.  It’s not something you can’t sleep through.  I go down and let him out.  Then things begin to cascade because my body assumes I’m up and starts its morning process.

The net result is that you feel a bit cheated when the time comes to get up.  Like you paid your quarter and didn’t get your prize.

The trails are nice and dry.  They are running perfect. I took Buddy for the first loop. He was fine.  I’ve taken to leashing him until we get into the trails because he gets lost sniffing around in the yard and I have to go back for him.

My legs and everything are fine.  I have a little Achilles in the left ankle, probably from wearing my work boots on Sunday to cut up that tree.  I went back out after work last night and split 4 more sections.  The rest of them I’m going to have to hit with the saw again to make them portable.  I’ve got a couple trees leaning into the house in the front yard that I have to figure out how to get down without a) dropping them on the house and b) killing myself.

My garden is finally coming in.  Looks like I’m going to get a good crop of tomatoes and maybe even some squash and cukes.  My berry patch is starting to fruit as well.  I sprayed my apple trees again last night.  They have so much fruit on them I figure I should at least make an effort.

One of the good things about this 5 at 5 routine is that it has become my meditation.  I woke up quite pensive about things in my life that I need to do and that are quite high stakes.  Normally I might take 20 minutes in the morning and do some guided meditation.  But, with the 40-50 min run in the woods I get that same meditative effect.  I’m able to think through the challenges, look at the things that are making me worry and form a prioritized action plan for it.

Very positive.  It’s hard to get down on yourself in the woods with your dog on a beautiful day.

Cheers,

C-,
