30 Day Diet Reboot Day 14

Today’s topics:

  • Meal replacement bars are not snacks
  • Big workouts burn big calories
  • Don’t over-spice your Vegan Chili

Woke up later than I had intended this morning and had to rush to meet my buddies for our Sunday workout.  Grabbed a Cliff Bar for breakfast because I didn’t have time to cook my oatmeal.  We had a 2-hour surge run on the docket and I thought I’d better get some fuel in my system.

The thing with Cliff Bars that I like to remind people of is that they are meal-replacement bars, not snack foods.  They aren’t bad for you, but they are super dense and 250 calories.  You just have to be careful not to treat them as snacks.

Read the labels of any of the snack or meal-replacement bars. Most of them are processed carb crap.  I like the Kind bars because they have nuts and honey.  I like the Cliff Bars if I have to miss a meal on the go.  Rachel likes the Lara Bars.  Just be careful because it’s a lot of calories in a small package without the green stuff.

Ran around 13 and a half miles this morning with my buddies.  It was about 13 degrees out with a frigid wind when we started.  We did a two-loop course with a substantial hill in it.  I loaded in a 3 minute surge every 20 minutes.  I ended up with an hour and 56 minutes of good, solid work.  Good workout.

This type of workout where you are working hard on a cold day for over an hour tends to have an outsized calorie burn.  You get into your fat stores as well.  It gets your furnace glowing and you burn calories for the rest of the day.  I think the impact of this kind of workout is much bigger than it looks on paper or even what MyFitnessPal says.

Made a big pot of vegan chili for the football game yesterday.  I got a bit carried away with the hot pepper.  Good news is that I’m the only one who will eat it now.  I like the hot chili because it fills you up on a cold day.  If you make it meatless like I do the calorie count is low and the nutrition is high.

That’s it for today.  Everything is going well.  I’ve got lots of energy and I think this cold is waning.

Cheers,
